Why are there two Films on Demand apps in Canvas, and which one should I use?

The Films on Demand app in Canvas has been updated. For a limited time, you will see two versions of the app in Canvas.

Films On Demand (New) – Use this version when embedding Films on Demand videos in Canvas going forward.

Films On Demand (Legacy) – This is the previous version of the app to be removed by January 2027.

Do I need to update FOD videos I already embedded?

If you previously embedded videos using the Films On Demand (Legacy) app, yes. You will need to replace those embeds using Films On Demand (New) before the Legacy app is removed.

This change only affects videos embedded using the previous Films on Demand app in Canvas. Videos uploaded to or embedded through Canvas Studio, YouTube, or other video tools are not affected.

Previously embedded Films on Demand videos should continue to work while Films On Demand (Legacy) remains available. Once the Legacy app is removed, videos embedded using it will no longer work.

To update an existing video, delete the Legacy embed from your Canvas course and re-embed the video using Films On Demand (New).

How do I use Films on Demand (New)?

If you have used the Films on Demand app before, Films On Demand (Legacy) may appear in your Apps menu in the Canvas Rich Content Editor.
