Several films on Kanopy are encrypted using Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection. Sometimes your device or your browser settings do not allow you to play the video. You might see an error that says something like:
The media is encrypted and we do not have the keys to decrypt it.
This error most frequently occurs for Chromebook users. The steps below provide a solution for problems viewing Kanopy films on a Chromebook. If you already have a personal Kanopy account, skip ahead to step 4.
- Visit Kanopy and select the upper right icon.

- Select Create an Account.
- Follow the prompts to create your account. You may use your preferred email to create an account. Confirm your account in the Kanopy-generated email.
- Go to the Kanopy app in the Google Play store and select Install. When the app is finished installing, open the app.
- Sign into the Kanopy app with your Kanopy account.
- Use the search feature (at the bottom of the app window) to find and select a video.
If you are still unable to view the video or are using a different device, please ask us for help so that we can help you troubleshoot.
