What should I know about sharing links?

Answer

Los Rios library employees and LibAnswers chat operators often work with students who are enrolled in courses at more than one Los Rios college. The following information will help ensure that we provide students with URLs that result in easy, intuitive, authorized access.

OneSearch

OneSearch (Primo VE) links do not include the proxy prefix in the URL. Instead, the college information is encoded in the view. If you would like to share a link to search results or a specific item in OneSearch with a user at a different college, it is recommended that you perform the search in the student's primary college view and share the URL in the address bar, or use the Permalink feature to share a link to the resource.

Do not add the proxy prefix to OneSearch URLs.

OneSearch base URL:

https://caccl-lrccd.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?vid=01CACCL_LRCCD:[college]&lang=en

Go to the college view by replacing the value of [college] with arc, crc, flc, or scc

EBSCOhost databases

Links to EBSCO should always begin with:

https://[college]losrios.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com

When you are browsing EBSCO databases, the URL that you see in the browser's address bar will look nothing like this. The URL includes information about the current session, and will not work when shared with another user.

Use EBSCO's permalink feature to copy the URL, including the college proxy prefix, to share the resource with others.

Films on Demand

Click on the Share button and select Embed/Link to find the permalink to Films on Demand titles. This permalink should include a wID parameter that corresponds to the college account:

https://[college]losrios.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=[value]&xtid=168585

If you don't see wID= in the URL, that's a bad thing; the user will not be able to get to the resource.

Kanopy

Kanopy links do not need the EZproxy prefix.  You may copy the browser URL and share directly with any Los Rios student or employee.

Proquest databases

Proquest links, with the exception of Ebook Central, include a college-specific account ID at the end of the URL.  If you are assisting someone at a different college, do the following before sharing:

  1. Replace the [college] value in the proxy prefix with the user's home college, or use the URL converter to correct the proxy
  2. Remove the accountid=[ID] string at the end of the link

Proquest sample link:

https://[college]losrios.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.proquest.com/magazines/critical-race-theory-debate/docview/2770951063/se-2?accountid=[ID]

The Proquest account ID is included in the following databases:

  • Ethnic NewsWatch
  • US Major Dailies
  • NY Times with Index
  • Coronavirus Research Databases
  • Vogue Archive
  • Black Freedom Struggle in the United States

Other databases, articles, videos and other licensed content

The college-level EZproxy prefix is included in database links on each college's database page.

When you are on campus and visit one of the databases, you will not typically see the proxy information because you have been recognized as an authorized user. If you share these URLs with users who may be off-campus, the links will not work as expected and the user will not be able to access the resource.

Check to see if a permalink is available for articles, videos and other licensed content.  If you use the address that is in the browser bar (JSTOR, Gale, ScienceDirect, etc.) it is preferable to have the EZproxy information at the beginning of the URL rather than in the middle of the domain.

Use the URL converter to add the correct proxy prefix to the resource URL, or to reformat a link that includes the EZproxy information in the middle of the URL.

  1. Choose the college of the student or employee you are assisting
  2. Copy the URL of the resource you would like to share
  3. Paste the URL into the first box, and click Convert
  4. Copy the generated URL to share
