How do I unlink a bib record from the Network Zone?

Answer

Only records that have OCLC numbers should be in the NZ. (Exception: bibs we are ordering that do not yet have records in WorldCat.) Equipment and other odd things should only be in our Institution Zone.

If you find that your library has placed a record in the NZ that doesn't belong there:

  1. Select Edit in the bib record to open it in the Metadata Editor (MDE).
  2. Select Record Actions - Copy to Catalog.

This action will sever the link between your IZ record and the NZ record. You can confirm this has happened in the following ways:

  • If you search for the record in the IZ, you will no longer see the NZ icon next to the title;
  • If you look at the 001 field, you'll see that the number ends with the institution suffix (for Los Rios, 5325) instead of the network suffix.

This will in many cases leave a record in the NZ without any library holdings. That's ok. We are not supposed to delete bibs from the NZ. It will be cleaned up during regular NZ maintenance.
