I know that we no longer charge overdue fines. How should I communicate with students about their overdue loans?

Answer

Always encourage students to return materials by the due date/time. While we no longer penalize students with overdue fines, the due date reflects the scarcity (short-term loans) or demand (loans that are recalled) for the materials students have borrowed. Prompt returns of borrowed materials promotes a positive experience for all patrons, and for the library.

When speaking with students via chat or at a library service desk, please remind them:

  • Returning materials on time helps other students have access to materials they need.
  • Returning materials on time also helps the student avoid fees and the stress of clearing them up. When overdue items become Lost, a balance owed will appear in eServices.

Encourage students to log into My Library Account to view the due date/time for materials on loan.

If students tell you they will be unable to return items on time, encourage them to discuss the matter with Circulation staff. In some cases staff may be able to extend the due date to avoid the materials becoming overdue.

If students have been assessed a lost item replacement fee, ask them if they still have the item. If so, it’s best to return the item to the library in order to clear up their account and remove charges in eServices.
