Why am I seeing two Films on Demand embed apps in Canvas?
The Films on Demand app in Canvas has been updated. For a limited time, you will see two versions of the app in Canvas.
- Films On Demand (New)
- Use this version when embedding Films on Demand videos in Canvas going forward.
- Films On Demand (Legacy)
- This is the previous version of the app, which is currently functional, but will no longer be available in Canvas starting January 2027.
Why is this happening?
Films on Demand's vendor, InfoBase, released a new version of their Canvas app to conform to a later LTI standard (version 1.3). LTI is the protocol used by various Canvas add-ons.
The legacy app has broken a few times lately, so we are urging instructors to migrate to the newer version.
Do I need to update FOD videos I already embedded?
Yes. If you have Films on Demand videos that were embedded previously, you will need to replace those embeds using Films On Demand (New) before the Legacy app is removed.
Previously embedded videos should continue to work while Films On Demand (Legacy) remains available. Once the Legacy app is removed, videos embedded using it will no longer work.
To update an existing video, delete the Legacy embed from your Canvas course and re-embed the video using Films On Demand (New).
How do I use Films on Demand (New)?
If you have used the Films on Demand app before, Films On Demand (Legacy) may appear in your Apps menu in the Canvas Rich Content Editor.

To find the new version:
- Click View All under Apps in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) in Canvas.
- You will see both Films On Demand (Legacy) and Films On Demand (New).
- Select Films On Demand (New).

What will happen in Spring 2027?
- The older app, currently labeled Films on Demand (Legacy), will no longer be available in Canvas.
- The newer app, currently labeled Films on Demand (New), will be relabeled to read, simply, Films on Demand.
